What is insulin resistance? Insulin resistance is most commonly identified amongst those with diabetes; whereby the body's cells stop responding to the peptide hormone insulin. Insulin has a function in facilitating the uptake of glucose from the blood stream into cells. Therefore, there is a diminished ability to uptake glucose from the blood stream into the cells for cellular use. However, insulin resistance isn't just seen in diabetic patients. It can also be seen in conditions such as Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, and in early states of metabolic disease. Conventionally, patients with diabetes and a diminished capacity to respond to the body's production of insulin are often prescribed injectable insulin that is taken prior to the consumption of meals, to aid the movement of glucose into cells.
