? What is Red Light therapy/ Photobiomodulation?
It is the use of red light or near-infrared light for healing and therapeutic benefits. This light typically ranges from 620nm to around 1000nm in length. It is popular for; skin, collagen and anti-ageing, training and muscle recovery, inflammation and joint pain, melatonin and sleep, and so much more. It is a safe, non-invasive, and drug free therapy.
? How does Red light therapy work?
The benefits of Red light therapy are partly due to its ability to deeply penetrate into bodily tissues and cells. Red light has a greater penetration depth compared to other forms of light, such as UV, blue, green or the longer infrared wavelengths. These non-red wavelengths cannot reach as deep and affect the underlying tissue in the way that red light does.
This deep-tissue penetration allows for a systemic biological effect on mitochondria throughout the body, boosting energy production and regeneration. Mitochondria are the energy producing units of our cells. Improving mitochondrial function will essentially improve the overall health of your body.
The chromophores in the mitochondria of cells (particularly cytochrome c oxidase) absorb the red and near infrared photons, which enhances cell signalling, reduces oxidative stress, and increases adenosine triphosphate (ATP) production. ATP is a crucial molecule required by all living things to make usable energy for your body.
Just as plants use light energy to generate complex molecules via chlorophyll, our chromophores utilise the energy of the photons to do the same, just for a different set of reasons.
