Antioxidant capacity – Astaxanthin is a lipid soluble antioxidant and has been shown to provide exceptional protection against lipid peroxidation at the cell level as well as the ability to scavenge singlet oxygen, which is the most damaging of all Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS). Studies comparing astaxanthin to other well known antioxidants demonstrated astaxanthin to be 1000 times more effective than vitamin E (α tocopherol) against lipid oxidation and 550 times more effective against singlet oxygen.
Cell Membrane positioning – Because of its unique structure (lipid soluble polyene chain with polar regions at either end) astaxanthin has the ability to span through the bi-layer of the cell membrane protecting both the lipid center layer as well as the aqueous outer layers. This ability to protect the cell membrane is the key to the control of cell inflammation.
Anti-inflammatory effect – Multiple studies have shown the ability of astaxanthin to reduce inflammation, which could be considered the underlying mechanism for its many beneficial effects. In one example, astaxanthin was shown to play a role in cytokine regulation by inhibiting the expression of inflammatory cytokines and chemokines.
