Tricks and tips for getting your iron levels right!⁣ ⁣ ✔️ Reduce inflammation and stress and activate the parasympathetic nervous system through exercise, meditation, mindfulness, laughter and CBD. ⁣ ⁣ ✔️ Taking iron every second day to overcome the 24 hour iron block of hepicidin (see previous post) especially if subclinical inflammation is present. ⁣ ⁣ ✔️ Heal your gut and have sufficient HCL for breakdown and absorption and a healthy, well functioning liver. ⁣ ⁣ ✔️ Take iron with vitamin C and organic acids such as citric, lactic or malic acid to increase the amount you can absorb. ⁣ ⁣ ✔️ Avoid coffee, calcium, zinc or phytates (found in legumes, rice and other grains) with iron or iron rich foods as these will block the absorption. ⁣ ⁣ ✔️ Take a mineral iron supplement with fulvic acid included for high levels of absorption. Fulvic acid can aid in the body’s absorption and use of vitamins and minerals, has an ability to remove toxins and can act as a powerful antioxidant. Ask us which one we use.⁣ ⁣ ✔️ Vitamin A is essential for the ulisation and storage of iron. So you may want to look at vitamin A containing foods like herring, cod liver oil, eggs, orange and yellow vegetables and add more in. ⁣ ⁣ ✔️As a supplement option Iron bysglycinate is a good choice, it been shown to have higher levels of absorption and storage and lower gastrointestinal side effects. ⁣ ⁣ ✔️ You can also cook with the @luckyironfish . What Impacts on iron absorption? ⁣ ⁣ 🩸 Iron is absorbed from food in the small intestine and transported by binding to transferrin ( a protein produced by the liver).⁣ ⁣ 🩸 Inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract is a huge player. Therefore if you suffer from Inflammatory bowel disease, have intolerances you don’t know about or are eating lots of processed and non organic food, its likely that your ability to absorb iron is reduced.⁣ Your stomach acid or HCL ( hydrochloric acid) helps to break down the food we eat. Inability to break this apart properly can lead to an inability to take on the right nutrients and minerals. ⁣ ⁣ 🩸Hepcidin is another factor we tend to forget when it comes to iron. It is a peptide hormone produced by the liver that regulates iron intake by blocking its absorption, it responds to inflammation (mainly cytokine IL-6) and iron.⁣ When inflammation is present it is highly likely it could be blocking your iron being absorbed. ⁣ ⁣ 🩸 To absorb iron we also need assistance from certain cofactors, as well as avoiding substances that block iron absorption. ⁣ ⁣ See the next post for the tips and tricks to get your levels optimised and what you need to have more of and what to avoid. ⁣ #iron
Testing for Iron?⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ 🩸 For iron levels the biochemical measures used are haemoglobin, serum Iron, ferritin, transferrin, transferrin saturation and hematocrit from a blood sample. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ 🩸 Indications that your iron is low would be seen in the levels of serum iron dipping over time as well as ferritin, haemoglobin and hematocrit. Hematocrit shows the percentage or number of red blood cells. ⁣Symptoms of low iron can vary, they could be fatigue, weakness, headaches, pale skin, breathlessness and dizziness. ⁣ ⁣ 🩸 Having too much iron can also be a bad thing, causing oxidation of the cells, tissues and organs, so the balance here is key as well as testing every 6 months to a year if your prone to low iron and are supplementing. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Note: when your acutely ill or fighting an infection your ferritin levels can be seen higher on your test. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ See next post on what impacts iron absorption. ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ #iron #anaemia #oxygen #revitalhealth #perthhealth #functionalneaturopath ⁣

If you don't have enough iron, your body can't make enough healthy oxygen-carrying red blood cells. Which means not enough oxygen for your body to function. However iron is also a component of other proteins myoglobin, cytochromes and enzymes involved in redox reactions⁣ ⁣ 🩸 We need to get iron from our food. The absorption of iron from food is complex and not all iron is equal in food. There is 2 types of iron haem and non-haem. Haem and non-haem is available from animal food sources and plant foods have only non-haem. What can we do to support gut health and our gut microbiota? 🤔⁣⁠ ⁣⁠ 🔸Increase the diversity of the food you eat, making sure they are as free of chemicals and pesticides as you can get. This is the fuel and food for your bacteria… make them happy:)⁣⁠ ⁣⁠ 🔸Eat the foods that don’t cause inflammation to you. Find out what you're intolerant and reacting to and avoid it. It’s not forever. After some healing has occurred, many foods are able to be reintroduce. Ask us, or make sure you find a qualified health professional to help you with this. ⁣⁠ ⁣⁠ 🔸Probiotics are not always the answer. You may have too many of the bacteria that you're supplementing with already and this could be making the inflammation worse. It can even be contributing to more histamine (which is a reaction from inflammation) which you don’t want. Testing is crucial to dig deep into the microflora and advice from a professional.⁣⁠ ⁣⁠ 🔸Heal intestinal permeability by removing irritation and inflammatory foods as well as chemical and environmental toxins. Following on from yesterday's post on the gut microbiota & dysbiosis...⁣⁠ ⁣⁠ 👉When does it all go wrong? ⁣⁠ ⁣⁠ Diversity starts when we are born. Born through the vaginal canal we get a big gulp of bacteria that sets us up for life, as well as breast feeding this gives us the start of a great immune base which is around 70-80% residing in the gut. However as our world today has an increase in sterile environments, chemicals and pesticides that either weaken the immune or destroy our microbiome, it leaves us set up for not only chronic inflammation but also a susceptibility to auto immune disorders.⁣⁠ ⁣⁠ 👉Intestinal permeability aka leaky gut.⁣⁠ ⁣⁠ This is the movement (through larger gaps in the intestinal lining) of bacteria, their neurotoxic counterparts LPS’s (lipopolysaccharides) and other toxins from the gut to the rest of the body. This is a significant problem to all areas of the body, increasing levels of allergies, chronic widespread inflammation and especially effecting the brain through the gut-brain axis. Normally the lining of the gut and tight junctions prevent disease causing pathogens from getting in and letting the nutrients to fuel you in. Intestinal permeability has been linked to diabetes, inflammatory bowel disease, celiac, asthma, acne, rosacea, headaches and fatigue.⁣⁠ ⁣⁠ 👉Why stress can impact and even cause dysbiosis?⁣⁠ ⁣⁠ The gut and the brain are in constant communication through the gut-brain axis gut via chemical signals. ⁣⁠ ⁣⁠ Studies have shown that exposure to certain stressors can change the makeup of the microbiota, decreasing the good guys and increasing the ones we don’t want in abundance. Therefore everyone who is likely to be experience stress (yes I think that’s a lot of us) is at more risk for developing IBD (inflammatory bowel disease), IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) and even reflux.⁣⁠ ⁣⁠ Stay tuned for another post, where we discuss things we can do to support our gut health and microbiota! 🤓
We have 39 trillion bacterial cells in the human body with over one thousand species. These mighty guys are not there to make us sick, quite the opposite. We rely on them to make us healthy and function well. They digest our food, keep the immune system running, remove endotoxins (internal) and exotoxins (external), produce some of our essential vitamins and chemicals and communicate with the rest of the body, even the mitochondria; our powerhouses of the cell (and our main energy producer) evolved from bacteria.⁣ ⁣ So what is dysbiosis?⁣ ⁣ The diversity or balance of our bacteria is the key for our optimal health. When they become imbalanced this is what we call dysbiosis but it’s much more than this.⁣ ⁣ Firstly lets talk parasites: some can help the immune system by enhancing regulatory T cell function, some live in harmony with the body, however some can also cause havoc. Knowing what you have through quality functional testing is key to investigate this.⁣ ⁣ Now onto bacteria... ⁣ ⁣ There are four main phylum or groups of bacteria, the Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes, Actinobacteria, and Proteobacteria. Then most of our bacteria belong to the genera, (which is the next step under the phylum) Bacteroides, Clostridium, Faecalibacterium, Eubacterium, Ruminococcus, Peptococcus, Peptostreptococcus, and Bifidobacterium.⁣ ⁣ Some of these are more beneficial than others and when you get an over diversity of some over others, that is when big problems can occur!⁣ ⁣ Fungi also exist in the human body as well as yeast.
